A Moment In History...

This is a post to share with my friends about what today has meant to me as a person, a Canadian, a woman of color and neighbor to our fellow Americans. First to my neighboring Americans, I am so proud to witness this moment not only in your history but in the history of the world. I KNOW where I was when this all took place. I can say that to my grandchildren and maybe even one day my great-grand children. I am proud that my children have been able to be in this generation to see this incredible change. It was not that long ago that there were seperate schools for our black and white children, seperate entrances for the movie theaters and seperate water fountains for us to drink from. With every generation, change has been brought about. " With every trial in our lives, lessons can be learned and what doesn't kill us, build us up. "We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things....On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord... starting today we must pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off...We are ready to lead once more...Our power grows through our prudent use...we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned...we are the keepers of this legacy...Our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken... for we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength not a weakness...we are willing to extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist...Our challenges may be new, the instruments that we use to face them maybe new, but hard work, honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and partriotism, these things are old, these things are true...the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny...why a man, whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a sacred oath...let us endure what storms may come...God bless us" These are just a few of the things that President Obama said in his acceptance speech. As a woman of color, I did not think that I would see this day come. In fact, I thought that we would have seen a woman as president before a black man. There is a difficult road ahead for our neighbors which in turn affects us as Canadians. Regardless of whether or not we all have the same political, religious, or personal views, the spirit of unity and hope is strong among us all.

It's been really inspiring to watch the inauguration today. Great post, thanks Lesley! I'm not into politics at all, nor did I vote for him, but I support our new President and am proud to be an American today!!

Phil, the kids and I all watched the Inauguration today...I wrote it in Karington's babybook too because it is a moment in history and she witnessed. No matter who people voted for or agree with politically it cannot be argued that it was and is a momentous occasion and I don't think any of us will forget it.
